Birkenhead Park started the game the brighter and their efforts were rewarded with a well worked try. A strong drive from Captain Ollie Mabbot then fed debutant scrum half Sean Lynch who put winger Euan Alldis in the corner. Converted by the ever reliable Dave Hall.
This sparked some life into the Bowden who then dominated the following twenty minutes scoring three uncoverted try’s to lead 15-7. At this point the game was entertaining but littered with errors. Park to often failed to retain possession or chose the wrong option in attack.
Ex Bowden player Nic Witte was next on the score sheet for Park who waltzed into the corner following great work from Paul Hellier. Hall again adding the extras with the tricky conversion. Park now had their tails up and finished the half in the lead as Jack Ashcroft scored after good forward pressure, again converted by Hall.
Half Time 15-21
Bowden started the second half well and scored another unconverted try to really put the pressure on 20-21. Park had to make a change Fintan Lynch came on at centre replacing the injured Adam Wellington and veteran prop Matt Ibbotson came on in the front row. The visitors were now in the ascendancy, Dave Hall was starting to take control at Fly-half bringing the forwards into the game. Park pressure resulted in a penalty which Hall converted and a try for Ollie Mabbott followed again converted by Hall. A last minute Hall penalty sealed the win.
Park spokesman George Pollock commented afterwards “It was a good win in the end considering we conceded four try’s. It goes to show how lucky we are to have a kicker of Hall’s quality” The evergreen Hall has not missed a kick so far this season!
