Manchester Rugby Club

54 - 33

(HT 21-21)

Birkenhead Park RFC
Birkenhead Park travelled to Manchester for their fifth away game on the bounce with another much changed squad. Dave Morgan started at Nine instead of Sam Chidley who’s season finished last week after he broke his ankle at Stockport. Pete Coles and Alan Hughes started in the Second Row and Nic Witte came in at Prop with James Millward at Hooker.
Park kicked off with a brisk wind at their backs and had the worst possible start with Manchester scoring from the kick off. Things went from bad to worse when after 5 minutes a poor pass was snaffled up by the home winger who ran into score from 80 yards 14-0.
Park responded well but found the visitors defence hard to break down. The game turned on its head on in the 25th minute when winger Finn Laing scored a fine try, gliding past three players to score. Almost immediately from the restart Adam Roscoe intercepted a loose pass and ran in from ninety yards to score under the post, Dave Hall kicked both conversions to bring the score level at 14-14. The match had now turned in Parks favour and they took the lead when in form centre Adam Wellington finished off a good backs move, converted by Hall 14-21.
A shell shocked Manchester did respond with another converted try on the stroke of half time to finish an entertaining half all square at 21-21
Half-Time 21-21
Manchester upped their game in the second half and quickly took the game away from Park scoring a further 5 tries. Park did score two of their own as Garin Roberts crossed the whitewash and Finn Laing scored his second of the match to bring in a much needed 4 try bonus point.
Team Manager Terry Hall said “I’m delighted by the effort and commitment shown by the lads today and we definitely deserved something from the game. It’s been a tough five weeks playing away from home and we’ve so many boys out injured but the lads who have come in have done a grand job”
Park will be delighted to be back at the Upper Park next weekend when they welcome Douglas. Please note it’s a 2.30pm Kick-off to accommodate Douglas who have an early evening flight back to the Isle of Man.
