We are excited to continue our events programme with this play about the British and Irish Lions and rugby league great, John Bevan.
John broke all the rules of cross code transition from union to league and also from South Wales to North of England. These are moves we now take for granted today.
We are very committed to developing our events programme which has seen some wonderful shows and we haven't forgotten the forthcoming Johnny Cash and 7th November and The King at Christmas Elvis Show on the 27th December both of which have only a limited number of tickets left. See Martin O'Keefe for cancellations, cry offs and returns.
This new stage play by Meols writer Mari Lloyd about Welsh rugby star John Bevan starts its Northern Autumn Tour at Birkenhead Park rugby club. John Bevan Team Player-from Lions to League, will be performed at the Pursglove suite at Birkenhead Park Rugby Club The Pursglove Suite Birkenhead Park rugby Club 8 th October at 7.00pm, and 11 th October at 3.00pm marking the 55th anniversary of the only defeat of the All Blacks in a test series by a touring British Lions squad.
The play covers three pivotal years in the life of Welsh rugby legend John Bevan. Starting with the British Lions triumph over the All Blacks in the 1971 test series. It continues with the success of the Barbarians in 1973 and ends with Bevan’s first season playing rugby league for Warrington having switched codes. And in the 1970s that meant that there was no way back. For a Welsh international, “going North” could mean glory or the end of a dream.
The play has been performed in South Wales and at the Halliwell Jones Stadium as part of Warrington Wolves 150th anniversary celebrations. A further extension of the tour has been made possible by the support of Simon Moran of S.J.M. Concerts, owner of Warrington Wolves said:-
“Having watched the play in Warrington, I was delighted to help get it more widely seen. The story of John is told brilliantly; I’ve been a fan of John since the first game I watched Warrington at Wembley in 1975“
We are very much looking forward to seeing the play and would appreciate passing this newsletter onto anyone in your family or friends group interested in sporting history.
John Bevan himself plans to travel up from his home in South Wales for the Wigan and Birkenhead Park FCshows. No guarantees can be given but that is his intention. Bring your rugby artefacts for autographs! We will confirm his attendance asap but let's show the rugby world once again our appreciation, as a Lions Origin Club, for the stories of past players.
